### Lesson Plan: Writing Paragraphs
**Grade Level:** 2nd Grade
**Subject:** Language Arts
**Topic:** Writing Paragraphs
**Duration:** 45 minutes
#### Objectives:
- Students will understand the structure of a paragraph.
- Students will be able to write a paragraph with a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
#### Materials:
- Whiteboard and markers
- Chart paper and markers
- Worksheets with paragraph templates
- Pencils and erasers
- Sample paragraphs (printed)
- "Paragraph Checklist" handout
#### Standards:
- Common Core State Standards (CCSS) ELA-LITERACY.W.2.1: Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words (e.g., because, and, also), and provide a concluding statement or section.
- CCSS ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
#### Introduction (10 minutes):
1. **Hook**: Begin with a short story. Read a simple paragraph aloud to the class. Ask students what they think the paragraph is about and what makes it clear.
2. **Discussion**: Explain that a good paragraph has three main parts: a topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
#### Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
1. **Teach**: Use the whiteboard to write a sample paragraph. Label each part: topic sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence.
2. **Examples**: Show printed sample paragraphs and ask students to identify the different parts.
3. **Modeling**: Together as a class, write another paragraph on the whiteboard. First, brainstorm ideas for a topic. Write a topic sentence, then ask students for supporting details, and finally, formulate a concluding sentence.
#### Guided Practice (10 minutes):
1. **Group Work**: Divide the students into small groups. Give each group a worksheet with a paragraph template. They will fill in the blanks to complete a paragraph. Circulate and assist as needed.
2. **Peer Review**: After writing, groups will exchange papers and check each other’s work using the "Paragraph Checklist" handout.
#### Independent Practice (10 minutes):
1. **Worksheet**: Give students another worksheet to write their own paragraph individually. They can choose a topic from a list provided or come up with their own.
2. **Silent Writing**: Encourage students to use the checklist to ensure their paragraph is complete.
#### Conclusion (5 minutes):
1. **Sharing**: Ask a few students to share their paragraphs with the class.
2. **Review**: Recap the main parts of a paragraph. Reinforce why it’s important to have a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
3. **Homework**: Assign a paragraph to be written at home on a different topic, using the structure learned in class.
#### Assessment:
- **Formative**: Monitor group work and individual writing to assess understanding.
- **Summative**: Review the homework paragraph to evaluate if students can independently write a well-structured paragraph.
#### Differentiation:
- **For advanced students**: Encourage them to write a longer paragraph with more detailed supporting sentences.
- **For struggling students**: Provide additional scaffolding with sentence starters and extra one-on-one assistance.
#### Reflection:
- After the lesson, note which students struggled and which excelled. Adjust future lessons based on these observations to better meet the needs of all students.
